Dunblane High School WW1 Request

Monday 13th March, 2017

Each year Dunblane High School organises a pupil trip to the battlefields of Ypres Salient in Belgium and Somme in France.

In 2014 the Royal British Legion, Poppy Scotland and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission launched ‘Everyman Remembered’ – an initiative to keep alive the memory of all who fell in WW1, which ensures that every person from across the Commonwealth who died is individually commemorated by those alive today.

On 11th May this year 73 Dunblane High S1 pupils will create their own version of the initiative during their trip to Flanders. The group will take names from the Dunblane War Memorial and lay a wreath on their grave or memorial in the centenary year of their death.

This means that the group will focus on soldiers who were killed in 1917, and pupils and staff are trying to make contact with relatives and descendants of the following:

Gilbert Scott DCM
James Murdoch
Robert Gemmell
John Barnes
James McArthur
George Wilson

If you are related to any of the soldiers mentioned above and would like the group to lay a commemoration on your behalf, please contact Mr Iain McRobbie at Dunblane High School on 01786 823823 or by email at mcrobbiei03s@glow.sch.uk.

While it won’t be possible to lay a wreath for everyone named on the Dunblane memorial – the names chosen are those buried or commemorated in cemeteries which are on or near the trip itinerary – those who are not commemorated in this way will be remembered during the school’s Armistice Day service in November.
