Family favourites Funbox will be among the exciting line-up of entertainment and music at the 2019 Stirling Christmas Lights Switch on (17 Nov).

The trio of Anya Scott-Rodgers, Gary Coupland and Kevin Macleod, who all starred in the hugely successful Singing Kettle, are preparing a fun-filled festive feast of catchy tunes, silliness and humour for kids of all ages - from nought to 90!

Expect traditional singalong songs with a Scottish flavour, Christmas classics, plenty of arm waving and foot stomping.

Great mix of foot-stamping singalongs

Gary said: “Gary said: “We are doing Christmas in Toy Town as our main show, which we will be doing at the Albert Halls in December, so the Christmas lights will be a mini preview along with Funbox classics and festive singalongs.

“We will be doing all the classics with the actions to ensure everyone can get involved in to keep warm, such as Over the Irish Sea, Shove your Granny off the Bus and Going on a Bear Hunt.

“There will be a Christmas theme, with songs like Jingle Bells so there will be a great mix of foot-stamping singalongs.”

Gary was one of the founding members of the award-winning Singing Kettle, which grew from small beginnings to be a huge box office draw across the UK over three decades. After the curtain came down on the hit show, he formed Funbox in 2014 with Anya and Kevin and they have quickly become favourites for a new young audience - and some older fans!

Get everyone in the festive spirit

He said: “I think we are are on the third generation and there are a couple of shows you come along to and you see a group five adults and one baby and all the adults are doing the actions and the baby has fallen asleep!

“We really love performing, especially as it keeps the Scottish-ness of the songs alive for new generations.

“With people now on their phones all the time, it’s more important for kids to come out and see children’s theatre shows en masse as it’s really great for their confidence when they hear so many of them singing.

“It will be great to come along and to play before the lights gets switched on and get everyone in the festive spirit.”

Along with Funbox, singer songwriter Alix Muir, who reached X-Factor Bootcamp and has been involved in competitions such as Open Mic UK and Stars of the Future, will provide some star sparkle and get people dancing before the big switch on.

The amazing Tolbooth Young Performers and the talented musicians from Stirling High School will also take to the main stage, while host Jennie Cook, will keep everyone entertained. Elsewhere, the Big Noise Orchestra will light up the Stirling Arcade, and some of the best local up-and-coming bands will showcase their musical talent at a stage on Friars Street, outside Europa Music.

Earlier in the day, Santa and his reindeer will begin the FREE event with the traditional procession – supported by Thistles Shopping Centre - through the city centre, setting off from the Albert Halls at 2pm.

Seasonal spectacular

Stirling Council’s Convener of the Community Planning and Regeneration Committee, Cllr Chris Kane said: “It’s fantastic that Funbox, one of Scotland’s favourite family performers, will be among the headline acts up to kick off our festive celebrations in style.

“With a diverse mix of music and entertainment, and the ever popular traditional Santa and reindeer parade, this free family event is going to be another seasonal spectacular as Stirling gets its Christmas glow.”

Wonderful atmosphere

Vice Convener of the Committee, Cllr Maureen Bennison said: “This is always a special occasion that brings residents and visitors into the city for an afternoon of fabulous festive fun and joy.

“It’s always a memorable sight as our beautiful city centre sparkles brightly over the winter months, and with top family performers like Funbox getting the party into full swing, there will be a wonderful atmosphere ahead of the big switch on.

The on stage entertainment will get underway at 3pm, with the Stirling High School and Tolbooth Young Performers. At 3.45pm it’s Funbox, followed by Alix Muir until the big switch on at 5pm
