P1-3 pupils already receive free school meals and P4s will join them in becoming eligible for the provision this August*.
It follows an agreement made between the Scottish Government and local authorities in June that will see more than 90,000 pupils across the country benefit from the free school meal support during term time.
Parents and carers of P1-P4 children do not need to submit an application form for free school meals – but an application form must be completed if a school clothing grant is also required.
More information on free school meals and school clothing grants for the 2021/22 academic year can be found on our webpage.
Supports learning engagement
Convener of Council’s Children and Young People Committee, Cllr Susan McGill said: “We are committed to providing fresh, healthy and sustainable meals in our schools and our menus meet the highest nutritional standards.
“It’s fantastic more pupils will have free entitlement to our award-winning school meals as we know this supports their learning engagement throughout the school day and provides wider health and wellbeing benefits.”
Menus run on a three-week cycle in primaries and a four-weekly cycle in secondaries, with meals to suit every taste. Food is freshly prepared, using sustainable, seasonal ingredients, based on current healthy eating guidelines.
Vice Convener, Cllr Christine Simpson said: “We would encourage as many children to access our school meals given the wide-ranging benefits of a healthy, balanced and nutritious lunch.
“Through our work with the Soil Association, we are also helping pupils understand where their food comes from and how it’s prepared.
“We are also proud that all our meals are environmentally sustainable using free range eggs, meat and fish, in compliance with the highest UK welfare standards.”
