Stirling Council has marked this year’s Armed Forces Day with a flag raising ceremony as a show of respect for those who have served our country.
Armed Forces Day Flag Raising

To commemorate the occasion and highlight Stirling Council’s long history of support for the Armed Forces, the flag will fly at Council HQ at Old Viewforth on Saturday 26th August.

Stirling Council is an Armed Forces Covenant signatory and was recognised for its outstanding support to the Armed Forces Community by becoming a holder of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award.

The Ministry of Defence’s Gold Awards represent the highest badge of honour available to those that employ and support serving personnel, veterans, and their families.

Support for Stirling's communities

The Council has also recently recognised the key role played by the Armed Forces in supporting Stirling’s communities during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Locally the Armed Forces supported the planning and introduction of the community asymptomatic testing sites hosted on a rotational basis in Callander and Cowie.

Close relationship with the Armed Forces

Stirling Provost Christine Simpson said: “Armed Forces Day is a chance for us all to show our support for the men and women who make up our Armed Forces community.

“Stirling Council enjoys a close relationship with the Armed Forces and our support for Armed Forces Day is as strong as ever.

“I was delighted to recently present a special commemorative plaque to mark the key role the Armed Forces have played working alongside Stirling Council to support our communities during the Coronavirus pandemic.

“We owe them all so much, both for their past achievements and their ongoing work, and Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to show our appreciation for all that they do.”

Show appreciation to our veterans

Stirling Council's Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Bryan Flannagan, said: "Armed Forces Day allows us to celebrate Armed Forces personnel from the past, present and future.

"The day is an opportunity to show appreciation to our veterans, the ongoing work of today’s Armed Forces and also the opportunities that the Armed Forces offer our future generations. We will never forget the sacrifices they have made and continue to make for us all.

“We have a fantastic military heritage in Stirling and the Armed Forces flag will be proudly flying on top of Old Viewforth as a mark of respect for all those dedicated individuals who have served our country so bravely.”
