Stirling residents recycled and composted 54.5% of their waste during 2016/17. This is a huge achievement from both an economic and environmental perspective. It reduces landfilling costs whilst cutting the volume of greenhouse gases that are produced when organic waste decomposes in landfill.
We continue to look for ways to increase this participation in recycling and aim to move towards the Scottish Governments targets of 70% of waste recycled and a maximum of 5% sent to landfill by 2025.
By recycling the materials you can no longer re-use you are:
- Saving the Earth's natural resources.
- Saving energy and reducing the risk of climate change.
- Reducing the need for landfill.
Recycling is the third of the traditional "3Rs":
Recycling usually comes into play only after Reducing waste and Reusing materials are no longer options.
